Leave Society

By Tao Lin

This is a light, amusing read by a first-generation American author born to Taiwanese parents. The protagonist moves between the US and Taiwan (where his parents are), and is unable to feel at home in either place. The writing is snappy, and the tone makes fun of both American and Taiwanese stereotypes.

I would describe it as a snapshot in the life of the author, and as such you do not read it for the story - there is not really an ending. It's a book about moods and reflections. It does not offer deep thoughts, but it engages the attention. Anyone who has experienced or has reflected about the ambiguity immigrants and first-generations may feel when it comes to self-identity, will find in this book an ally.
